Know before you go

  • Prospector is mostly smooth, buff singletrack with a few short hike-overs; the Church Rocks lap adds red slickrock.
  • The Cottonwood Canyon trail west of the Prospector junction is closed to bikes and leads into wilderness. Turn left onto Prospector at the signed junction.
  • Red Cliffs NCA is desert tortoise habitat. Stay on the trail and give tortoises space if you see one.
  • No shade anywhere. In summer this is a sunrise ride or nothing.

Ride smart

  • Water: plan on about 1.5 L for this ride. There's none on the trail.
  • Signal is spotty. Tell someone your route and your time back.
  • Emergency: call 911 and say "Sunday Best ride, parked at Cottonwood Trailhead (Red Cliffs NCA), St. George, Utah", plus the coordinates from Locate me.
  • Wildlife: give horses, burros and anything with horns room, and never feed them.
  • Stay on trail. Desert crust and mountain soil take decades to heal.
