Know before you go

  • Smooth decomposed-granite surface with almost no grade. Great for kids, first rides and recovery days.
  • Turn around past the fifth tunnel. The trail continues on Bureau of Reclamation land to the Hoover Dam garage, but bike rules on that stretch are not clearly posted, so this route stops at the NPS section.
  • Popular with walkers and families. Ride slow, ring a bell, and watch for bighorn sheep on the slopes above.
  • Daylight hours only; summer mornings are the move since there is almost no shade.

Ride smart

  • Water: plan on about 0.5 L for this ride. There's none on the trail.
  • Signal is spotty. Tell someone your route and your time back.
  • Emergency: call 911 and say "Hi, My Name's Josh and I Don't Like Fun ride, parked at Historic Railroad Trailhead, Boulder City / Bootleg Canyon", plus the coordinates from Locate me.
  • Wildlife: give horses, burros and anything with horns room, and never feed them.
  • Stay on trail. Desert crust and mountain soil take decades to heal.
