Know before you go

  • Clockwise: east on the Old Spanish Trail, locals call it Rubber Ducky for the duck-decorated tree along it.
  • About 0.35 mi of Landmine Loop links the Old Spanish Trail to the top of Cactus Slalom. It's short; the rest of Landmine is the rocky part.
  • Cactus Slalom is the highlight: tight, twisty, mostly smooth. Watch the cholla on the inside of the turns.
  • Legal basis: all trails are in the BLM Cottonwood Valley system (Red Rock Canyon NCA, bikes on designated trails).
  • OpenStreetMap's Cactus Slalom line differs from Trailforks' in places. Trust the signs at junctions.

Ride smart

  • Water: plan on about 1 L for this ride. There's none on the trail.
  • Signal is spotty. Tell someone your route and your time back.
  • Emergency: call 911 and say "Ducky Run ride, parked at Late Night Trailhead, Blue Diamond / Cottonwood Valley", plus the coordinates from Locate me.
  • Wildlife: give horses, burros and anything with horns room, and never feed them.
  • Stay on trail. Desert crust and mountain soil take decades to heal.
