Getting there

Park at Little Creek Mesa slickrock parking

End of the graded road on Little Creek Mesa, reached from Little Creek Mesa Rd off UT-59 east of Apple Valley, UT

  • Roughly 8 mi of graded dirt from UT-59 with several turns and cattle guards. Park where the road reaches open slickrock; beyond that it becomes a high-clearance track. No facilities.
  • Start and finish are the same spot. Follow the cue sheet and the arrows on the map.

Know before you go

  • Advanced: open slickrock mixed with tight, ledgy singletrack, with lots of short punchy moves rather than one big climb.
  • Trails are marked only by small rock cairns. Load the GPX before you go; phone signal is unreliable out here.
  • BLM treats this mesa as environmentally sensitive. Ride only when it is fully dry; it stays wet longer than Hurricane in spring.
  • Want it shorter? The West Mesa loop on its own, ridden clockwise, runs about 9.5 mi per utahmountainbiking.com.

Ride smart

  • Water: plan on about 1.5 L for this ride. There's none on the trail.
  • Signal is spotty. Tell someone your route and your time back.
  • Emergency: call 911 and say "Cairn Hunt ride, parked at Little Creek Mesa slickrock parking, Hurricane, Utah", plus the coordinates from Locate me.
  • Wildlife: give horses, burros and anything with horns room, and never feed them.
  • Stay on trail. Desert crust and mountain soil take decades to heal.
